Palatine places an emphasis on developing “rounded individuals”.
“To embed a positive ethos we offer a wide range of extracurricular opportunities to all students,” says Chris Powell, head teacher.
“We have an active house system and achieving sports college status has further supported our values.”
The purpose of the house system is to engender a spirit of participation and competition in line with the ethos of a specialist sports college.
Students can contribute to their house totals in a number of ways both in and out of the classroom.
The physical education faculty has 11 full time members of staff, a student sport support officer, a graduate teacher trainee and a number of student teachers who throughout the year are all training to become physical education practitioners.
It is now in its fourth year of sports college status, and pupils are encouraged to develop as performers, coaches, umpires and sporting leaders.
The key focus of the curriculum is to develop pupils into independent learners both practically and academically.
This is done through a range of teaching styles, equipment and sporting activities.
Palatine values the need to offer pupils both competitive and recreational activities, team and individual sports and through curriculum work encourage pupils to take part in out of hours learning at school and to join local sporting groups.
Pupils are assessed on a regular basis and actively promote the use of peer and self assessment.
All pupils set themselves targets which are reviewed in order to ensure that progress and achievement are recognised and rewarded.
The success and participation of pupils is celebrated with a sports awards evening at the end of the school year.
