Fallen heroes

Sergeant Lee Johnson Corporal Damian Lawrence

The faces you see below portray the human cost of the British Forces' campaign in Afghanistan since it began in October 2001.

Among the 106 who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country are two locally based soldiers killed in action during their battalion's tour. Both were members of the 2nd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment (2 Yorks based at Weeton Barracks). Sgt Lee Johnson, who was 33, and a father of two young children, died just a fortnight before Christmas 2007. Cpl Damian Lawrence, 25, was killed two months later while taking part in an operation to clear explosive devices from a compound.
