Club on course for promotion

NEWTON Hall Blackpool Swimming Club were winners of the second round at Stretford of the North-West Speedo League to keep on course for promotion. With 226 points, they pipped Southport by seven and following were Oswestry (196), Copeland (189), Chorley (162) and Kendal. Newton Hall will be promoted to the premier division if they win the final gala at the Manchester Aquatic Centre next month. Sarah Lucas, Annalicia Bowden and Victoria Crawford won two individual events and Tony Lucas won his individual backstroke race as Newton Hall gained top-three places in 29 of the 34 events. The girls 15 years and under and open teams won both the medley and freestyle relays. Team members were Savanna Cairns, Victoria Crawford, Georgina Higson, Elizabeth Hodgson, Sarah Lucas and Keleigh Spector. Bradley Birch,Tony Lucas, Mark Rimmer and Mark Tootill won the boys medley relay.

WITH new club captains Lee Ormerod and Louise Holden at the helm, Fleetwood finished third in a Speedo League meeting at the Europa Pool in Birkenhead. Star performer for the girls was Rebecca Fausset, with three wins. For the boys, James Taylor had two wins and James Parkinson one. In the Junior Sprint Meet at Wrexham, Fleetwood picked up 37 medals including 11 golds. Amber Taylor, age 10, won four golds in achieving three personal bests that involved smashing a Wrexham club record. Martha Hirst,12, won two golds, one silver and a bronze. Kyle Preece, aged eight and in his first competition, landed two golds and a silver and twin brother Callum had a gold and three silver. Bradley Wallbank and Gabriella Davey, both nine, each had a gold and silver, Alex Ward two silvers and fellow 10-year-old Jack Hirst a bronze.
