School of the week: Anchorsholme
Anchorsholme certainly got their teeth into the Sharks’ swimming gala at Palatine.
Their Year 5 and 6 swimmers from the Thornton Cleveleys primary won the overall first prize and took the trophy for the best boys’ team.
Anchorsholme were always confident after finishing third in the previous month’s relay gala.
Competing against eight other Blackpool primary schools, Anchorsholme’s Christopher Jowett, Joseph Royales, Louise Langton and James Francis all won their races and were awarded medals for the fastest individual times. Other heat winners included Alex Cartwright and Scott Clarkson.
The boys’ Year 5 relay team of Lewis Christy, Scott Clarkson, Alex Cartwright and Sam Redman won their event, while the Year 6 team of Matthew Chadwick, Joseph Royales, James Francis and Chris Jowett followed suit.
The Year 5 girls’ relay team – Rachel Hoggarth, Rebecca Jackson, Fiona Hockey and Hannah Newell – put in a sterling effort as did the Year 6 quartet of Louise Langton, Lauren Johnson-Allen, Amy Billing Parker and Emma Chisholm, who were third. Andrew Sheffield and Lewis Maney-Roskell swam very well in the reserve race and the cannonball.
This continued the school’s winning run of sporting success after the boys and girls’ football teams both reached the finals of football competitions at Stanley Park.
They were also narrowly defeated in a play-off for the Football League Community Cup.
After winning the Montgomery athletics tournament, eight pupils represented the school at the borough athletics final at Blackpool Sports Centre and were narrowly beaten into second place.
Anchorsholme also reached the final of the YPS Rugby competition at Stanley Park only to be pipped in extra-time.
The school is entering a Year 3 and 4 team in Montgomery’s benchball competition, giving children the chance to experience competitive games after training at lunchtimes.
With Youth Sports Week just around the corner, PE co-ordinator Steve Tomes is again looking forward to Anchorsholme entering every event.
Other sports which the pupils have the chance to participate in include basketball, table tennis, netball, Dodgeball, Tri-Golf, rounders and hockey.
