Scorpions hold on to win thriller

Woolston Rovers 14-20 Blackpool Scorpions u13s

Scorpions had to work very hard for this important victory over the team directly above them in the league. Blackpool started very well with the forwards Frankie Campbell, Christian Roberts and Ben Brown all making good proress. Joe Roberts distributed well to Joe Phelps and Jordan Tierney and inked up with the powerful Callum Prue who scored two quick tries which were both converted. Hard forward running from Jordan Curtis, James Revell and George Higgins gave Blackpool most of the first half possession. and great tackling from Campbell and Scott Butler prevented Woolston from getting any time with the ball.

Tense

Woolston though came out fired up for the second half and Scorpions mistakes gave the Warrington side a vital try to get them back in the game. Scorpions then had to survive intense pressure on their own line from the Woolston pack. The home side kept the pressure on following a Blackpool knock on under the sticks.Woolston scored a further two quick tries with one conversion setting up a tense last few minutes. Blackpool though regained the initiative and got themselves out of trouble through great work from Butler, Curtis, Tierney and the impressive Campbell. Matty Stowell scored a try on his debut with Prue completing his hat-trick.

New sports on College timetable

Following the successful introduction and operation of the basketball academy, Blackpool Sixth Form College has introduced two new sports academies for 2007 – rugby union and netball. The academies allow elite performers in each sport to be able to progress as performers by benefiting from high level coaching and competition. Students will combine their studies with at least two training sessions per week and competitive matches. Academy students will also be involved in taking associated coaching and officiating qualifications as well as first aid. Once qualified, students will undertake voluntary work in the local community at schools and clubs, coaching and officiating matches and competitions.

Trials

The BSFC netball academy are in the North West colleges league as well as being entered in the British Colleges netball tournament. If they are successful in this regional competition they will represent the college and the region at the British Colleges national finals at Loughborough University. Girls from the academy will also have the opportunity to attend trials for British Colleges and English schools representative teams. The BSFC rugby academy will also compete in the British colleges competitions.
