Scorps are Lion tamers

Folly Lane Lions 0 Blackpool Scorpions (U15s) 26
Scorpions started brightly against the slope in Swinton and Anthony Livingstone crashed over for the opening try, which he converted. Matthew Hulme did well as an emergency full-back but Scorpions could not turn pressure into more points, despite strong runs by centre Christian Cornall and second row Tom Anderson, and it remained 6-0 at half-time. Adam Butcher had a try ruled out for a forward pass but second row Josh Shearman soon added one that did count. Scrum-half Oliver Jordan’s tackling kept Scorpions on the front foot and player of the match Matty Egan scored from close-range following Hulme’s telling run from inside his own half. Straight frm the restart, John Beattie fed stand-off Liam Wilkinson and he raced 70 metres to the try-line. Centre Zack Ward scored the final try wide on the right and Livingstone finished with three goals. Eccles Salford 12 Blackpool Scorpions (U13s) 14
Scorpions put recent disappointing results behind them with this hard-fought first-round victory in the North West Counties Cup. Frankie Campbell, George Higgins and Callum Prue all made powerful early runs and full-back Jordan Tierney opened the scoring in the corner from an inch-perfect Joe Phelps kick. Ben Brown, Scott Butler and Thomas Downing led the defensive effort and Scorpions stretched their lead when Prue finished off a flowing move and Phelps converted. Eccles hit back with a try to trail 10-4 at half-time. Joe Roberts, Clinton Neal and Elliot Taylor helped keep Scorpions in the driving seat and Christian Roberts made an immediate impact of the bench, making 20 metres before Phelps and Tierney linked up to send Matty Stowell diving over. Two quick Eccles tries set up a tense finale but gritty Scorpions held on, with debutant Ryan Bradshaw competing well. Outstanding for Scorpions were Connor Millward, Phelps, Stowell and man of the match Tierney.

Five-star Kris show

Tarleton 19 Fleetwood (U16s) 43
Flying centre Kris Phillips gave Fleetwood the perfect start, racing in at the corner for the first of his five tries in the second minute. Fleetwood started at a frenetic pace and Phillips soon added a second after good work by forwards James Cameron and Henry Turner. Tarleton struck back with a converted try before full-back Grant Cowie started the move which ended with winger Jamie Railton sending Phillips away for his hat-trick try. The final try of the half went to the home side and Fleetwood had to defend strongly after the break, but then a crashing run by No.8 Adam Dawson enabled scrum-half Tom Evans to sprint through to score from inside his own half. Man of the match Evans then set up the next try for Railton and Tarleton scored their final try before Phillips added two more, his fifth the move of the match started by Alex Maddern. It was a workmanline warm-up for Fleetwood ahead of Sunday’s Lancashire Cup ties against Orrell. Southport 7 Fleetwood (U14s) 21
Fleetwood defeated Southport for the second time in three weeks but with a totally different side. Second row Robert Foulkes opened the scoring after fellow forwards Levi Hargreaves, Adam Williams and Peter Bidle build the pressure. However, Southport hit back to lead 7-5 at half-time. Fleetwood rang the changes and regained the lead when James Wilson powered through from inside his own half. They camped in the Southport half but met stiff resistance, though their expansive play of scrum-half Xavier Burchkard paid off and there was a second try for Wilson and two for Ashley Seddon, both converted by Wilson. Prop Chris Pilkington was named man of the match.
