Super Scorpions run riot

Blackpool Scorpions RL (U15s) 56 Widnes Moorfield 0
Scorpions took full advantage of the conditions in a near flawless first-half display. Omar Frederick opened the scoring and then wrongfooted the defence for a second after good work by scrum-half Oliver Jordan. Loose forward Anthony Livingstone converted both. Stand-off Liam Wilkinson accelerated away for the third try as hooker Matty Egan directed the attack throughout and full-back Joe Bullock raced between the posts for the fourth. Centre Zack Ward was prominent in defence and scored a try before Bullock added his second. Leading 36-0 at half-time, Scorpions continued to dominate, with John Beattie to the fore with his clever offloading. Second rows Joe Williams and Josh Shearman also stood out and Frederick ran 80 metres for a spectacular second try. Ward burst through for another long-range try and Wilkinson also scored a second after John Beattie had gone close. Christian Cornall scored the final try after a memorable run by Matthew Hulme. Livingstone finished with seven goals. Scorpions team: Joe Bullock, Adam Constantine, Christian Cornall, Zack Ward, Adam Butcher, Liam Wilkinson, Oliver Jordan, John Beattie, Matty Egan, Omar Frederick, Joe Williams, Josh Shearman, Anthony Livingstone, Matty Cotton, Matthew Hulme, Tom Drury, Danny Percival, Kyle Daniel, Taylor Ramsden

Blackpool Scorpions RL (U13s) 18 Culcheth Eagles 30
Culcheth took a shock early lead early with a converted try as Scorpions failed to take advantage of the wind in the first half. However, they pulled level when Joe Phelps converted man of the match Callum Prue’s fine solo try from a scrum. But Culchech defended well and scored again before Frank Campbell powered over for Scorpions. Jordan Tierney’s conversion edged the Blackpool side in front 12-10 at half-time. But Culcheth were relentless after the break, taking full advantage of any defensive weaknesses to score three tries. Tierney scored a late consolation try, goaled by Phelps. Also impressive in a disappointing Scorpions display were Clinton Neal, George Higgins and Scott Butler.

Gallant Arnold go down fighting to a last ditch try

Arnold Junior School’s Under-11 rugby team gave a heroic display in their first match of the season against St Mary’s Hall. They pushed the Stonyhurst College side, who have been playing since September, all the way before going down 14-10 to a try two minutes from time. Arnold’s Year 5 and 6 boys scord two fine tries. Captain Matthew Garrod led from the front and inspired his team-mates. St Mary’s led 7-0 at half-time but Callan Barrow went close to a try for Arnold after a fine break by Alex Vowles. Arnold did hit back when Sam Hopkins stole the ball and raced almost 50 metres for a fantastic solo try. They took the lead five minutes later, when Andrew Perry beat two men from 30 metres out to make it 7-5. Top tackling by Elliott Fackey and Matthew Swallow protected the lead until a last-gasp try in the corner won it. Also against St Mary’s, the under-12 A and B teams lost 26-7 and 31-5 respectively. Harry Spracklen scored a good try in the A game and James Hart was the B scorer, though both sides competed well.
