Invincible Colts go marching on

Blackpool Colts 19 Eccles 7

BLACKPOOL preserved their 10-week unbeaten run in this exciting contest. No.8 Benny Evinson took the Blakpool pack forward early on but they struggled to finish moves off. However, their pressure paid off when Ross Mellor-Clark did the spadework for Pete Armstrong to score in the corner. Captain Grant Blackshaw added an outstanding conversion. Last week’s man of the match Richard Docherty gave another superb display, while Will Richardson, Mellor-Clark, Pete Ward, Adam Davies and Danny Haggerty were all to the fore with Blackpool in the driving seat. A good Evinson run resulted in the second try, with Davies outpacing the defence to make it 12-0 at half-time. Eccles forced Blackpool onto the defensive after the restart and scored a converted try. But Blackpool responded with determination as good work by the powerful Armstrong and second-rower Mike Mitchell set up the field position for Blackshaw’s clever kick to find Mellor-Clark, who showed fancy football skills before beating the full-back to score. Scott Hardie, Ryan Rostron and Eddie Dowdall all deserve a mention.

Ahmed at the double

Arnold School’s Under-13A showed their fine form with two wins in three days. They were impressive 22-5 winners over St Mary’s Crosby, with Ahmed Ahmed crossing for a brace of tries. Scrum-half Louis Mottley and full-back Oli Hopkins scored the other tries. They then progressed to the quarter-finals of the Lancashire Plate with a very hard- fought win over Cowley High School of St Helens. In horrendous conditions, Tom Hammond was in fantastic form as he crossed for both tries to seal a workmanlike 10-0 win. In the other matches against St Mary’s, Arnold’s Second XV lost 17-5 to the Crosby school’s first XV. Arnold’s forwards were very impressive throughout but a Max Hampson try was not enough. The U15A met stubborn St Mary’s defence and lost 12-5 despite a James Cave try. The U12 and U14A teams both suffered agonising defeats. The younger team lost 10-7, with Charlie McLean the scorer, while the U14s went down 28-26 to a conversted try in the last minute. Jacob Nickson and Joe Shaw both scored two tries.

Kirkham’s muddy marvels

KIRKHAM Grammar School’s 25-11 win over Hutton Grammar could have been even more convincing had they adapted their style to the heavy conditions. Hutton led 6-5 at half-time after winger Tom Bowden had put KGS in front. Captain Richard De Carpentier roused his forwards as flankers Jonathan Edwards and Gregor Aitken started to dominate. Two tries from line-outs by Kieran Brookes and Jonathan Edwards put KGS in control, while reliable full-back Joe Brown scored a try and two goals. Also against Hutton, the second XV won 20-10 despite failing to capitalise on chances. Drake put them in front with a pushover try, with Wasim Riley and Michael Gyi also crossing. KGS edged the Under-14 A game 15-14 after Sam Hall opened the scoring from Will Roper’s pass in a well executed set-piece move. Hutton hit back with two tries to lead at half-time but then KGS stepped up the pace. Adam Galley and Harry Moulding led the charge and Micky Papangelis burst through for a try. The dangerous Precious Nwaokomah scored the matchwinner but it was good defending by backs Joe Walsh, Josh Rowlands and Tom Hurst which clinched victory. The under-12 A team lost 17-7 but battled back bravely in the second half, when Adam Coates’ try was converted by Will Lockhart. The B team also conceded early and finally lost 31-10. Macauley Murgatroyd got them on the scoreboard before half-time but they fell 24-5 down before Jonathan Chan forced his way over.

Fleetwood (U16s) 5 Fylde 5

This Blacksticks Blue Lancashire Cup derby was switched to Fleetwood and proved a tight affair in heavy conditions. Good Fylde defence denied Fleetwood flanker Danny Maher and Ben Ruddlesdin . Fylde used the wind in the first half but George Worthington, Jack Foden and Henry Turner defended stongly. A great clearance kick by Jamie Railton launched Fleetwood towards their only score, when captain James Cameron crashed over from winger Railton’s inside ball. Fylde drew level from a scrum as centre Charles Hough found a gap in the defence and dive in and make it 5-5 at half-time. Fleetwood attacked in the second half as the weather and pitch worsened, though decent ball-play was hard to find. Joe Birks and Sam Russell were strong for Fleetwood as the match ended all square.

Fleetwood (U14s) 24 Southport 0

Fleetwood gained a crucial win in their bid to reach the knockout stages of the Lancashire Plate. With Asa Watson and captain Jordan Leighton, celebrating his Lancashire call-up, driving Fleetwood forward, they opened the scoring when second row Robert Foulkes powered over. Southport defended bravely but could not prevent centre Joshua Landmann scoring the second try after more good work by Leighton and scrum-half Xavier Burchkard. James Wilson’s conversion made it 12-0 at half-time. Wilson scored the next try, having earlier gone close to crossing for an amazing solo try, as man of the match flanker Giles Hayton drove his side forward. Ryan Randal scored the final try and Wislon completed the scoring with his second goal.

Livingstone wallops the Warriors

Blackpool Scorpions RL (U15s) 26 Haydock Warriors 10

MAN of the match Anthony Livingstone scored a try and three goals as Scorpions mastered the wet and windy conditions to overcome a St Helens side previously beaten only once all season. The home side conceded a first-minute try but soon got their game together as full-back Joe Bullock scored in the corner, loose-forward Livingstone adding the goal to level the scores. Haydock scored again against the run of play but Scorps bounced back with a try by powerhouse centre Zach Ward. Matty Hulme went close, while backs Liam Wilkinson, Oliver Jordan and Josh Shearman defended well as it remained 10-10 at half-time. Omar Fredrick and Bullock were prominent after the break, as were props John Beattie and Tom Wainwright and it was Livingstone who crashed over for the third Blackpool try which he converted himself. Big hits by Joe Williams and Adam Butcher protected Scorps’ lead and the influential Matty Egan set up the next try for Livingstone. Jordan completed the scoring with an excellent try, while replacements Tom Anderson, Matty Cotton and Tom Drury all caught the eye. Team: Joe Bullock, Adam Butcher, Josh Shearman, Zach Ward, Matty Hulme, Liam Wilkinson, Oliver Jordan, John Beattie, Matty Egan, Tom Wainwright, Omar Fredrick, Joe Williams, Anthony Livingstone, Tom Anderson, Matty Cotton, Tom Drury
