Bradley’s double all in vain
Arnold won’t bow to King’s
KING’S School in Macclesfield boasts almost three times as many boys as Arnold School but the Blackpool rugby players performed with great merit against them.
Arnold’s under-12B team were in wonderful form, winning 36-0 with two tries apiece from Joe Welch and Declan Humphries, while Lewis Dunsmore-Nield and Sam Walton also scored.
The first XV used the wind well to lead 12-0 at the break thanks to tries by John Embelton and David Reed.
Four penalties tied the scores but superb Arnold defence prevented King’s crossing their whitewash until a last-minute try sealed a 19-12 win for the Macclesfield school.
It was a similar story in the second XV match, which was scoreless until the 70th minute, when King’s broke clear to win in the dying seconds.
Robbie Goodier’s penalty gave Arnold the lead in the under-15A match and flanker Tom Eyre almost scored from a barnstorming run.
King’s eventually used their big pack to run out 27-3 winners despite fine play by Goodier, Stephen Hurst, Tom Wright and Ben Blake.
The under-14A earned a 10-10 draw thanks to two Tom Rutherford tries, while Edward Harrison and Ben Mortimer scored in the 32-10 under-14 B defeat.
Harrison Kenworthy scored for the under-13A in a 50-5 defeat, while the Under-12A paid for not turning pressure into points, losing 14-0 to two late tries.
National girls’ rugby festival
King’s School in Macclesfield also staged a national girls’ rugby festival in which Lytham’s King Edward & Queen Mary School took part.
KEQMS won five of their eight matches, while their B team went through the tournament unbeaten.
The first XV won 10-3 in Liverpool, with all the points scored by Robert Whittam.
The Under-14s ground out a 5-0 win in howling winds and driving rain, with Ansdell’s Tom Higham scoring the all-important try.

Blackpool Colts 28- 3 Bury Colts
BLACKPOOL won through to the second round of the Lancashire Colts Cup despite being forced into a pack reshuffle, with stand-off Dave Collis outstanding at flanker alongside Jon Ashcroft.
An ankle injury cut Danny Haggerty’s return short, forcing further changes.
Strong runs by Benny Evinson and Ben Johnson soon posed problems for Bury, while centres Will Richardson and Ross Mellor-Clark gave fine displays.
Bury took the lead with a penalty before prop Ryan Rostron scored for the second game running to make it 7-3 at half-time.
Blackpool made the most of the wind after the break as Scott Hardie drove over after a fine break by scrum-half Pete Armstrong, bravely playing on despite a shoulder injury.
Blackpool went straight back on the attack, and excellent winger Davies almost scored from halfway before sending Mellor-Clark in for the try.
Will Richardson punched holes in the defence and Armstrong scored the final try after good work by No.8 Johnson.
Goalkicker Blackshaw made it four conversions out of four to make sure Blackpool go into this weekend’s league rematch full of confidence.
