Tom swings it for Fylde

Fylde RU (U14s) 22 Sandbach 19

A late converted try from full-back Tom Higham earned victory for Fylde against their Cheshire opponents. The home side scored early as centre James Aird won the chase from his own kick. Alex Roper dived over for the second try after a strong run by No.8 Oliver Trippier. Fylde made nine changes for the second half but kept their momentum. Full-back Ralph Dowds ripped through the defence and sent winger Alex Hoskisson in at the corner. Fylde were forced to make changes due to injuries and the visitors hit back with three tries to lead 19-15 with time running out. From a scrum on the 10m line, good work by scrum-half Sam Madden and captain Emilio Arciniega enabled Higham to score. The kick was converted by Arciniega to seal another great win for this improving Fylde team.

Fleetwood cling on to their record

West Park 31 Fleetwood RU (U16s) 31

Fleetwood maintained their undefeated start to the season ...but only just. The visitors were under the cosh for the first 10 minutes and conceded the opening try. However, they gradually found their feet and centre Kris Phillips scored a first half hat-trick. Flanker Danny Maher scored the fourth try after some slick ball handling by Tom Evans to make it 24-7 at half-time. The home side scored shortly after the restart but Fleetwood regrouped and second row Steve Preston scored from a break by full-back Tom Speed, Evans converting. West Park lifted their game to score a further three tries to level the scores. Fleetwood travel to Waterloo in the third round of the Lancashire Cup this weekend.

Fleetwood Squad: Birks, Cameron, Cowie, Dawson, Evans, Foden, Hird, Macdonald-Hall, Maddern, Maher, Morgan, Phillips, Preston, Railton, Riley, Ruddlesdin, Speed, Teale, Turner, Webster, White, Worthington.

Zach attack sends Legion packing

ZACH Ward ran in two tries as Scorpions returned to action with an impressive win over their Wigan opponents. Scorps defended their line with determination early on, Omar Fredrick setting the bar with a huge hit. Anthony Livingstone, playing in a new role at loose forward, forced his way over for the opening try, converting himself. Forwards John Beattie and Tom Anderson ran strongly, while determined tackling from Oliver Jordan, Joe Bullock, Josh Shearman and Livingstone helped protect a 6-0 half-time lead. Scorps then took control, good handling allowing Adam Constantine to go over in the corner. The next set saw stand-off Liam Wilkinson add a neat drop goal before Ward’s barnstorming try under the sticks was converted by Livingstone. Legion scored a deserved try before Ward’s second effort sealed the game, Bullock converting. Kyle Daniels, Matty Cotton and Alex Fisher all came on and contributed well in a solid defensive effort. Livingstone, Beattie and Ward took the accolades, while Matty Hulme made a fine debut.

SCORPIONS battled well but couldn’t manage a shock cup victory against premier league opposition. Blackpool competed well, providing some resistance through the tackling of man of the match Frankie Campbell, Callum Prue, Ben Brown and George Higgins. However, the St Helens team established a 28-0 half-time lead. James Revell and Frankie Campbell made breaks, supported by Jordan Tierney and Jordan Curtis, but Scorpions couldn’t turn territory into points. Scorpions return to league action at home to Widnes Moorfield this weekend, when a win would move them up to second place.
