Holland treble as Colts run riot on league debut

Blackpool RU Colts 68-24 Sedgley Park

BLACKPOOL Rugby Club played their first ever junior colts league fixture against Sedgley Park. And they made a flying start against one of the larger teams in the league as Grant Blackshaw, playing in an unaccustomed stand-off role, scored in the corner. Sedgley seemed shellshocked as Blackshaw sent winger Ryan Holmes on a 60-metre sprint to the line and then converted to make it 12-0 after five minutes. Ross Mellor Clark scored his first try and outstanding captain Ben Holland then went over for the first of his three. Latest signing Pete Armstrong had a fine debut in the back row and was rewarded with a fine try down the blindside. Sedgley hit back with two tries before Holmes raced in for his second to make the half-time score 34-12. Good tackling by Mellor Clark enabled centre partner Will Richardson to score next before Sedgley replied. Blackpool's front row of Ryan Rostron, John Ashcroft and Dean Fairclough competed well against a much larger pack and Holland drove over from 10 metres for the next try. He soon completed his hat-trick in the corner and Tomas Sanderson scored straight from the restart. Sedgley scored two tries but Blackpool had the last say as wing debutant Marlon Pace collected Blackshaw's crossfield kick to score. Flanker Armstrong was named man of the match for a dogged and determined display. Coach Paul Moran said: "We have lost several players and a few guys were playing out of position, but our determination to win shone through."
