Multi-activity

Fun and games for the Bears

CHILDREN from two disability sports clubs came together to take part in a multi-activity competition. Youngsters from Blackpool Bears Sports Club and St Annes Fun Pod met for the first time at Blackpool Sports Centre, testing their skills in a variety of activities including basketball, indoor javelin and boccia – a paralympic event similar to indoor bowls. Sporting new football kits donated by the Nationwide Building Society, the Bears were overall winners, though medals and certificates were presented to both teams. The biggest cheer however was reserved for sports-mad Mayor Robert Wynne, who was all too keen to help out in a rounders game- so long as he was allowed to bat first! Blackpool Bears coach Anthony Harris said it was the first time an event of this scale had been held, and he was delighted it had been a success. He said: “We decided to organise a competition, not only because the kids would love it but also so we could share some ideas with the Fun Pod leaders. “It was a really good day, and everyone enjoyed themselves. “We’re hoping this event will be the first of many, there’s even talk of a possible mini-Olympics some time in the near future.” Blackpool Bears have organised sports for those with disabilities and learning difficulties since 1995, while the St Annes Fun Pod is less than a year old.
