Steve Quarmby
Well done to Marcus and Daniel Quarmby from South Shore who both excelled in the World Biathle Championships held in Monaco last weekend. Marcus raced in a field of 20 of the world's best U15’s athletes and Daniel similarly for the U13’s age group.
Marcus came 7th in a time of 5min 2secs, a huge 25 seconds better than his previous personal best and Daniel came 12th with an excellent 10 second improvement on his earlier personal best. It was a massive step up in class for the Arnold senior schoolboys, whose first biathle was the British Championship only two months ago.
The hundred strong GB party competed against twelve other countries and finally topped the medal table pipping the outrageously fast South Africans to top spot with nine gold medals.
The biathle, a variant on the biathlon, is an exhausting run-swim-run sprint event. The swim, taking place on this occasion, in the sea off the Larvotto beach in Monaco.
The Blackpool brothers, who swim with Newton Hall and run with the BW & F athletics club thoroughly enjoyed their experience and are already preparing for next year's finals in South Africa, where they hope to go one better and win a medal place.
