Golden moments
TWO Lytham St Annes YMCA Judo Club youngsters struck gold at the under-16 Hull Open Championships.
St Thomas’s Primary School 10-year-old pupil Tom Riley, figuring in the toughest group of the lot, won the 34 kilos section after coming through seven fights to reach the final, where he beat a Leeds opponent.
YMCA’s other gold was landed by 11-year-old Mary Aldersley, from Lytham St Annes HS, who saw off a heavier opponent in the under-48 kilos category. She sealed victory over her Hull rival in the final with a marvellous ippon throw.
Her elder brother George, also from Lytham St Annes HS, was pipped for gold in the final of the boys’ 12-15 under-38 class.
George was joined with a silver by fellow 12-year-old school pupil Zak Amond, runner-up at over-55.
A bronze went to 11-year-old Aiden Bell-Smith, of St Thomas’s CE.
