Teams’ clean sweep

King Edward & Queen Mary girls' hockey teams enjoyed a clean sweep over strong hockey school Bradford Grammar on Yorkshire soil at the weekend. The first XI won 2-O, whilst the under 15s dug deep and came from 2-0 down to win a close game 3-2. Lytham teenager Natasha Singleton scored 4 in the under 14s convincing 5-2 win, but it was the under 13s A team that really shone with an outstanding 13-0 demolition of their Yorkshire opponents. St Annes girl Georgia Coughlin scored 8 and was named player of the match for an outstanding display of attacking hockey. The under 13s B team completed the clean sweep with a disciplined performance that earned them a 3-0 victory. Head of Girls PE at KEQMS Kay Hanham commented "Bradford are a big school with a strong hockey tradition so it was particularly pleasing that we triumphed at all levels in this fixture."

Making a real splash in pool and on pitch

LITTLE Lucy Whalley is making waves in Red Rose sporting circles. The 10-year-old’s talent in the swimming pool and on the hockey pitch has landed her dual Lancashire honours. Lucy, who lives in Tudor Close, Thornton Cleveleys, has added to her place in the county’s swimming elite with a call-up for the under-12 hockey squad. Somehow she finds time to train for both sports. Being part of the exclusive Gallica group of swimmers means the Blackpool ASC starlet takes the plunge five times a week. She’d belonged to Blackpool for little more than a year before county coaches spotted her in August as one for the future. Now the Rossall Junior School pupil is poised to prove a big hit at hockey as well. She’s set for her representative debut after storming through trials as part of Lancashire’s development squad. Attacker Lucy is in her second season playing for the junior school’s first team and four goals in three games means she’s well on the way to finishing leading scorer again.
