Nathan’s calling all the shots

INDOOR hockey starlet Nathan Wilding is kicking up quite a storm.
The 11-year-old Blackpool boy was in the North team which won the under-12 age group at the British inline hockey championships staged on his home rink at Rotherham, where he plays for Norton Cyclones.
Nathan, who attends Breck primary school at Poulton and lives in Newton Drive, was the only lad from the North-West. The North had a clean sweep of group victories against the South, South-East, London and North-East and then beat the South-East in the final.
Now Nathan’s skating towards a major double. He’s in the Norton Cyclones side which next month competes in the national club championships for the second successive year.
The youngster is so enthusiastic that he travels to Rotherham each week to train with the Cyclones, who have a match almost each month. The South Yorkshire town boasts a purpose-built rink.
He also belongs to the Blackpool Hotshots, who play friendlies and are coached at Stanley Park by his elder brothers Michael and Anthony. Sessions are every Saturday from 3.30 to 5.30 for children from three to 15-year-olds. Any children interested in getting involved can phone the boys’ father Tony on 0780 5242016.
A puck is used by Hotshots and a ball is used in the British championships.

Top keeper Kirsty lends kids a hand

THE future of hockey at King Edward and Queen Mary School looks to be in safe keeping.
England Under-21 goalkeeper Kirsty Mackay dropped in to help with coaching.
Bispham-based Kirsty, who also represented her country at under-16 and under-18 levels, took part in the last Under-21 World Cup in Chile. The coaching is clearly paying off at KEQMS, whose first XI recorded successive home wins.
They were 4-0 home winners over Rivington and Blackrod, with Jordana Singleton scoring a hat-trick.
They were the first goals of the season for player of the match Jordana, who netted both first-half goals. Laura Bury scored the third from an excellent corner.
They then defeated Ripley St Thomas 1-0, with Bury starting the move which was finished by Penny Pemberton for the only goal after seven minutes.
Full-back Jess Lambert went close to a second, while Laura Pickervance was the player of the match and vice-captain Elizabeth Hodgson defended well.

The Lytham school enjoyed a clean sweep of wins over their Rivington and Blackrod and the unbeaten under-15s had a hat-trick hero in Melissa Bentley.
Melissa opened the scoring in the first minute and further goals by Catherine Latham (2) and Rebekah Allen sealed the 6-0 win.
Suzanne Mills was player of the match.
The Under-13 A team were 3-1 winners thanks to two goals by player of the match Elle Anderson.
Wendy Wyatt and Alex Livesey were also outstanding.
The top scorer of the day was Katy Alderson of the under-13 B team, who scored four in the 6-0 win.
