Melissa hits ’em for six!
LANCASHIRE hockey player Melissa Bentley started the season in style with a double hat-trick.
And she wasn’t the only hat-trick hero for King Edward VII and Queen Mary School’s Under-15s in their 9-0 victory over Rossall School – Catherine Latham scored the other three. But they were beaten to the player of the match award by Gabby Hird.
The Under-14s also had a three-goal star in player of the match Natasha Singeton in their 7-1 win over Rossall. Olivia Shaw and Lottie Owen scored two apiece.
n OLIVIA Shaw celebrated her appointment as under-14 hockey captain for King Edward and Queen Mary School with seven goals in a 13-1 win at Lancaster Grammar.
Natasha Singleton and Lottie Owen shared the other six goals but Shaw was an outstanding player of the match.
However, they were the school’s only winners as Lancaster claimed the first XI clash 6-2, despite two Penny Pemberton goals and a fine performance by Laura Bury.
The other matches were drawn: the Second XI game 3-3 (player of the match Hannah Crawshay) and the under-15s 2-2 (Samantha Gill).

Kirkham’s hot shots
THE girls’ hockey team from Kirkham Grammar School (right) dominated the second half to record a 2-0 win over a strong Sedbergh side at Preston Sports Arena.
Nicole Pike and Sam Shopland-Reed scored the goals and Genevieve Melling was inspirational in goal.
The second team had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Sedbergh, having taken the lead via Grace O’Flaherty’s penalty corner.
Derby games between Kirkham and Arnold proved to be as close as usual. A goal in each half brought Arnold victory in the first XI match, as Cara Smith broke the deadlock and Sophie Oliver sealed the match, with Rebecca Shillito dominant in midfield.
Arnold won the Second XI match 2-1 with goals by Lilli Taylor, while Samantha Read held the defence together.
Dominated
A superb late equaliser by Georgina Read earned Arnold a 1-1 draw in the Under-15 A game, while the B match ended goalless despite an outstanding Annie Gillis performance for Arnold.
Arnold won the Under-14A game with goals by Charlotte Greenwood and Katy Goodacre and Kirkham dominated the B match 3-1.
Kirkhams’s U14B team dominated the game scoring three times but a determined second half display led to a consolation goal from Helen Craig.
Hollie Monteiro scored Arnold’s equaliser in the final seconds of the under-13A game and the B match was also drawn 0-0.
