Hat-trick for Kelly’s heroes

Cardinal Allen Catholic High School are celebrating their treble triumph in the Blackpool Development Schools Hockey Tournaments. Both of the Fleetwood School’s under-16 teams emerged victorious as did the under-13 A side. The elder A team won all six matches, scoring 20 goals and conceding none to amass a maximum 30 points. The under-16 B team were also unbeaten, winning three of their four games. The girls of both teams played superbly and credit is also due to Kate Kelly, who has worked tirelessly with them over the past three years. The under-13 A team defended the title they won last year in fine style, winning five of their six matches and drawing the other. Under-13s coach Fiona Cook is seeing her hard work pay off as the B team finished a creditable second, winning two games and drawing one of their four.

Arnold best in the North

Arnold School Under-14s have been crowned North of England hockey champions. It means the Blackpool school will have a team in the national finals for the 12th time since first entering in 1996 - a figure unmatched by any other school in the country Arnold under-14s reached the North of England stage by winning the county and regional rounds of the national tournament. In the opening game against York opponents St Peter’s School, Arnold started slowly and were 1-0 down at half-time. However, midfield duo Faye Shearer and Charlotte Evans inspired a second- half fightback and a 4-1 win was secured with goals b Holly Monteiro (2), Lara Cherry and Katie Goodacre. Cherry opened the scoring in the first three minutes against Altrincham Girls GS following a great run and pass by Monteiro. Sophie Akhtar and Hannah Hesketh defended well and Evans made it 2-0 at half-time with a fine strike from the edge of the circle. Monteiro, who finished as top scorer for the tournament, added two in the second half before Altrincham made it 4-1 at the finish. That meant Arnold were virtually assured of the title before even playing their final game against Yarm School from Stockton-on-Tees. Even so, they gave another slick performance to win 4-0 with two more form Monteiro. Olivia Stead and Rachel Fackey scored the others. The national finals will be staged in Surrey in March and Arnold head of hockey Andrea De Miranda said: “Every girl in the squad contributed to this fantastic achievement and all were well supported by a large crowd.” - DESPITE deteriorating weather, all of Arnold’s derby matches against King Edward and Queen Mary School at least got under way, bar the under-14s. The Arnold first XI were 2-0 home winners on the newly resurfaced astro turf. Sophie Oliver scored the opening goal in the first half after a superb pass from player of the match Georgia Perkins. Cara Smith scored the second on the rebound after Honor Cam’s shot from a penalty corner had been saved. Arnold Under-15s led 4-0 only for the worsening wind and rain to force an abandonment early in the second half. Two goals by Harley Greene and one from Katie Ashcroft made it 3-0 at half-time, then Georgina Read scored from a penalty corner. In the away fixtures, the Second XI won 2-1. Stephanie Lees scored the first after good work on the right from Emily Martin, who also had an effort disallowed. Lydia McNulty made it 2-0 after the break before KEQMS pulled back a consolation goal. Arnold Under-13A won 4-0 with goals from Monteiro (2), Evans and Leora Hyman. Abby Small scored a hat-trick for the Under-13B in their 8-0 win, the other goals coming from Lily Helme, Katy Astbury and Denika Mounsey. The Under-12 games both ended early, with the A game goalless and Arnold B leading 4-0.
