Match of the week: YMCA (U-13s) 1 Lytham Juniors (U-13s) 8
Lytham blast into last four of FA Cup
VIRTUALLY the entire Blackpool & District Youth League programme was wiped out for a second weekend running but the big cup derby survived the Fylde-wide waterlogging – though YMCA probably wish it hadn’t.
Lytham Under-13s ran amok at Seafield Road to win the all south Fylde Lancashire FA Cup quarter-final 8-1, with four goals in each half.
A closer contest was anticipated between the top two in the Domino division, especially after Lytham had edged this season’s first league encounter 2-0, but the unbeaten visitors were in rampant form on Sunday.
YMCA had no answer to the firepower of their front three, while the hosts were missing key striker Ryan Riley, who had scored two in the league leaders’ 5-0 win over Poulton last month, when the presence of the Gazette cameras brought them better fortune than it did last weekend.
Home manager Keil Fieldhouse had no complaints. He said: “It would have been closer had we been at full-strength but Lytham fully deserved their win.”
YMCA held their own for the first 15 minutes and had opportunities in the early stages, but after breaking the deadlock the visitors got on top and never looked back.
As always, the team which took its chances prospered, and Lytham converted their first four to take a commanding half-time lead.
After Sam Lamb had doubled the lead given to Lytham by the prolific Scott Tanser, Jack Ward scored the goal of the game.
It was a blistering shot into the roof of the net from 20 yards, then Mitch White made it 4-0 at the break.
The prolific Tanser went on to complete a hat-trick after the interval and goals by Robbie Bromley and Sam Webster completed the visitors’ tally.
The sixth goal, scored by Tanser, was the pick of Lytham’s second-half quartet. The striker seized on a good turn and lay-off by White to fire his shot into the corner of the net.
One of the few memorable moments for YMCA was Sam McLoy’s consolation goal, which made it 6-1. It was well taken and a deserved reward for a hard-working performance up front alongside the similarly tireless Jack Wood.
Lytham’s back four were solid throughout in front of outstanding keeper Cameron Hay, while Webster and captain Danny Scarlett controlled the midfield.
In the circumstances, the Seafield Road pitch held up very well and the sun even shone for a while.
For YMCA it was a disappointing note on which to sign off for 2007, though Lytham are back in league action on Sunday – weather permitting – against South Shore.
Lytham wait to discover who they must face in the semi-finals as manager Frank Whatmough explained: “There are still quarter-finals to be played. Five of the other seven teams we have faced before, so we’d rather play one of those.”
THE MANAGERS’ MATCH VERDICT
KEIL FIELDHOUSE (YMCA)
THEY were just a bit too good for us and their three up front were dangerous.
We really need to be at full strength against Lytham but we were missing too many key players.
It was a good game for the first 15 minutes but then our players’ heads went down.
FRANK WHATMOUGH (Lytham)
THIS was right up there with our 9-1 win over BJFF among our best performances of the season.
THE MEN OF THE MATCH
NO WINNER (YMCA)
DISAPPOINTED manager Keil Fieldhouse felt unable to single anyone out. However, those whose efforts earned praise from the boss wer e defenders Oliver Drury and namesake Keil Fieldhouse, and strikers Sam McLoy and Jack Wood.
CAMERON HAY (Lytham)
THE keeper commanded his area, not only making some good saves while the match remained tight in the early stages but also coming out to clear his lines whenever YMCA played a dangerous ball over the top.
