YMCA put on a five-star show!
BRAGGING rights went to south Fylde as YMCA Under-13 Girls defied the elements to defeat Thornton Cleveleys 5-1 at Seafield Road on Sunday.
The hosts ran away with it in the end, though this was a closely-fought encounter for long periods.
Thornton Cleveleys had the better of the early exchanges as the game began at a frantic pace.
However Stephanie Vickers broke down the right after 12 minutes and outpaced the Thornton defence to open the scoring.
YMCA got on top and Lauren Gallagher had an 18th-minute strike disallowed for offside.
Thornton made the most of this let-off to equalise four minutes later, when a mix-up in the YMCA defence resulted in an own goal.
Pressure
Thornton then seized the initiative, with Jenny McGill excellent in midfield, and it took a fine save by YMCA keeper Becky Sullivan to keep it at 1-1 until half-time.
YMCA came out the stronger for the second half and it was the turn of Thornton keeper Leah Wilkinson to perform heroics in goal to keep her team on level terms.
However, YMCA’s pressure paid off and two goals in three minutes put them firmly in control.
Vickers scored her second nine minutes into the second half, then Millie Gallagher found the net with an angled drive into the top corner.
As Thornton Cleveleys chased the game, more gaps opened up and Vickers completed her hat-trick with 15 minutes remaining to put the result beyond doubt.
Evie Manning put the icing on the cake with the final goal five minutes from time.

The free-flowing style of Thames
Thames Primary won the Girls’ Cup at Stanley Park, where Alix Reid was in unstoppable goalscoring form.
The Blackpool school beat Claremont in the first round 2-0 with goals by Marisa Davis and Demi Beeby.
Thames then had to come back from behind against Hawes Side in the second round before winning 5-4.
Alix Reid scored twice, including the winner in the dying seconds, with David and Beeby on target again.
Reid then scored a hat-trick in the 3-1 win over Waterloo to clinch a semi-final spot.
The semi-final against Anchorsholme was an end-to-end nailbiter. Both teams led for a while before another last-gasp goal secured the 3-2 win. The prolific Reid was again on target twice, Casey Stanton scoring the other.
Reid then made it 11 goals for the tournament with all four in the final against Revoe, which Thames won 4-2.
