Battlers of Waterloo

Kids triumph in shoot-out – now they’re playing for Lancs

BLACKPOOL’S Waterloo School will fly the flag for Lancashire in the North of England seven-a-side primary schools soccer tournament taking place in Blackburn early in the new year. Representing the town in the county finals also at Blackburn, Waterloo beat their Blackburn counterparts thanks to a dramatic late double blast by Lewis Wilson in the showdown to decide who became Red Rose ambassadors. Blackpool had been runners-up in their group, tucked between Blackburn and Preston, while in the other section were Darwen, Morecambe and Skelmersdale. Liam Walton’s goal gave them a 1-0 win over Preston which sufficed to send them through to the semis because Preston and Blackburn drew. Blackpool lost in the dying minutes 2-1 to Blackburn (Karl Jones scoring) to face the other group winners Darwen, who they swamped 5-0 through Walton (3), Jones and George Davison. Crashed In the final, Blackpool trailed Blackburn 1-0 until the closing minutes. Lewis Wilson equalised to send the game into extra-time. A penalty shootout look on the cards but with barely a minute left Lewis crashed in the winner off the post. Waterloo squad: Lee Squires (captain), Ben Wilson, Josh Errington, George Davison, Lewis Wilson, Karl Jones, Liam Walton, Josh Edwards and David Roberts.

WE are the champions – again!

Hawes Side show their delight after lifting the Blackpool Primary Schools football Cup for the second successive year thanks to a last-minute winner in the final. Having beaten last year’s runners-up Waterloo in the semi 2-1, they pipped Anchorsholme 1-0 at Stanley Park Oval thanks to Matthew Gardener breaking the deadlock with virtually the last kick of the keenly-contested game. They opened their campaign with a 10-1 win at Christ the King RC, followed with a bye and then beat Bispham Endowed CE 4-1. The semis and final were all played at the Oval and goals by Gardener and captain Jamie Thomas saw off Waterloo.
