Two fly flag in Lancs Cup

FOXHALL and Fleetwood Town under-14s carried the Blackpool and District Youth League banner through the third round of the Lancashire Cup. Fleetwood marched on 1-0 against Cadley Boys while Foxhall romped to a 5-0 win away to Walton-le-Dale. A first-minute goal by Steve Rankin did the trick for Fleetwood but they were indebted to a brave save by goalkeeper Danny Wiseman to prevent the tie going into extra-time. Foxhall rocked their hosts with two in two minutes midway into the first half through Jordan Wood and Chris Walsh and early in the second half a three-man build-up resulted in Jordan Wood increasing the lead. A double save by James Gazey prevented Walton pulling a goal back and Tyler Attack sealed the tie with a cool chip. James Daley completed the nap hand after his initial shot was parried. In the under-14 league, YMCA were sunk 6-1 at Warton Typhoons after being left with only ten players by three late cry-offs. Jason McGreehin scored YM’s goal to briefly reduce a 2-0 interval deficit. Warton scored three in the closing minutes as the ten visitors tired.

UNDER-11

A HAT-TRICK by Stephen Higgins spearheaded a 5-2 win for BJFF Whites away to Blackpool Rangers. McBrearty had put them ahead and Hargreaves opened his account with the second just after the interval. Rangers came back to 3-2 but Higgins and Luke Higham’s header snuffed out a comeback. FC Rangers and Wyre Juniors fought out an end-to-end tussle which Wyre won 6-4 after resisting a second half comeback by the home team. Wyre led 5-2 at the interval. Corey Patterson (2), Jamie Pearce, Harley Singleton, Bradley Smith and Tom Minns scored. Highly-placed duo South Shore and YMCA met for the third time this season and honours were even at 1-1. Shore had more of the play in the first half and deservedly led through Jack Williams and after Jack Crawford equalised both teams hit the woodwork as they strove for a winner. Kirkham Juniors were caught napping in the first half to lose 5-3 at Poulton Youth. In a five-minute spell they conceded two goals plus a penalty and only fine goalkeeping by Nathan Jones prevented the deficit being greater. Kirkham woke up in the second half with goals from Dec Cartwright (2) and Callum Fidling. Russ Townsend stood out for them in the second half. Goals by Will Abbotts, Wes Searle, Liam Walton and Callum Willoughby earned Spirit Of Youth a decisive 4-1 win over BJFF. Staining were undone by two late goals to go down unluckily 3-0 at Warton.

UNDER-12

KIRKHAM Juniors resisted South Shore’s second-half thrust to win 3-1 after leading 2-0 at the break. With David Murrell and Matthew Middlehurst outstanding for Shore, Declan Boyle reduced the deficit. Poulton Youth also had to defend doggedly after leading 2-0 at the interval against Clifton Rangers. Sam Willan (2) and Will Blundell scored and Billy Joyce and Will Lockhart impressed. League leaders YMCA strengthened their hold with a hard-fought 3-1 win away to third-place Foxhall. A Foxhall penalty early in the second half cancelled out Sean Kenny’s first-half goal but Linus Welsh restored the lead and Kenny notched his second minutes from time.

UNDER-13

SCOTT Tanser was on the mark nine times as Lytham Juniors beat Clifton Rangers 15-0. Other goals came from Mitch White (2), Jack Ward (2), Sam Lamb and Sam Webster. Blackpool Rangers and Warton Typhoons provided a splendid advert for the age group in a match which finished 5-3 in Rangers’ favour after Warton overturned an early deficit to lead 3-1 approaching half-time. Gibson completed a hat-trick in the closing minutes to seal Rangers’ turnabout. Declan Lynch scored the other two while Chris Davis had a fine game for Rangers. Jack Morrison was a quick starter with a goal inside a minute for Poulton Youth, who went on to beat Warton 5-1 with a hat-trick from Matthew Stowell. Cory Harrison got the other, with Wyre having scored just before half-time after trailing 3-0. Leaders Staining turned on the style in the second half to beat Foxhall 6-2 after trailing early on to a headed goal by Liam Crossley from Marrkus Pemberton’s cross. Staining levelled from a penalty just before half-time and ran in five in the second half before Jordan Payne headed a late consolation. Three goals in the last ten minutes wrapped up a 4-0 win for YMCA over Spirit Of Youth, whose goalkeeper Vickers had defied them beforehand. Sam McCloy’s header gave them a half-time lead and Ryan Allan, Robbie Hunter and debutant Jordan Finlayson shared the late goal rush.

UNDER-15

LYTHAM Junniors were in charge away to Blackpool Rangers, who went down 5-1 to goals by Shaun Tayhlor (2), Danny Thompson, Dan Wilson and Tommy Smith. Alex Grey was Lytham’s man of the match. Spirit Of Youth wrapped up their game with Thornton Cleveleys by half-time with all the goals in a 4-0 win. Josh Clark (2), Sam binks and a Jake Darnell penalty were responsible. Ten-man Clifton Rangers made FC Rangers worked hard before succumbing 4-1. The only goal of the first half was Nathan Fairnie’s volley from Liam Beaumont’s corner. Gritty Clifton equalised from a freekick but Cory Sellers restored the lead from long range and Beaumont and Bradley Atherton completed the tally.

UNDER-16

TWO late goals completed a hat-trick for Ross Ainsworth in Kirkham’s 6-1 win over Thornton Cleveleys. His first, from long range, opened the scoring early on and Craig Burke increased the first-half advantage. Jack Cookson grabbed the next two.

Depleted YM are floored by BJFF late show

LOWLY YMCA are searching for a pick-me-up after seeing their hopes of county glory dashed in the last fortnight. Injuries and sickness have eaten into their resources in their hopes of getting a lift in the Blackpool and District Youth League after bowing out of the Lancashire Cup to Cadley Boys of Preston. It looked like it could happen for two thirds of this match at Bispham Education Fields but they were sunk by two BJFF goals in the closing stages. With four boys injured and three ill, YM could muster only one substitute in goalkeeper and manager’s son Daniel Spencer and he got on for the second half under his dad’s policy of giving the squad’s two keepers a run. By contrast, BJ had the luxury of a full squad with 18 to choose from. Spencer junior appeared after mid-table BJ had overturned the fifth-minute lead Taz Moxon gave YM with a smart shot when BJ keeper Antony Frost couldn’t hold a shot. Two minutes later, however, YM’s starting keeper Tom Sharples couldn’t hold the wet ball as he fell on it and Danny Duffy pounced for the equaliser. There was nothing to split the teams at that stage but BJ got their noses in front a quarter hour later with a shot from Scott Thompson which gave Sharples no chance.

Balance

The two goals rather took the shine off things for Sharples, who had produced some alert saves towards the end of a half in which Danny Pickervance had proved a constant threat down BJ’s left wing. In the second half right winger Alex Hui assumed the mantle of dangerman while Moxon and co-striker Neal Williams did need watching for YM. Eight minutes into the second half YM centre half Nathan Armstrong had special reason to celebrate. He rose to a corner by Adam Zyda to power home a header for his first goal of the season and put the final outcome in the balance. However, the dazzling Hui paved the way for his side to regain the lead 20 minutes from time. His cross was turned in by Joe Frattazzi and although YM tried gamely to draw level again their fate was sealed five minutes from the end. Thompson kept his cool in the box and found the top corner. Harry Foley impressed with a hard-working display for YM, who earned sympathy from BJ boss Dave Bartholomew. He felt they are a stronger side than their down-table position suggests and can see them beginning to climb.

THE MANAGERS’ MATCH VERDICT

Dave Bartholomew (BJFF)
We went in on the back of a good result in the Lancashire Cup so the expectation was to continue where we left off. We had the better of the first half but our last pass let us down. In the end most of the possession was with us and the pressure on YM.

Steve Spencer (YMCA)
It was a good, competitive game with impressive football from both sides. We had a disappointing finish in conceding two goals to a fast, attacking Bispham. The game was played in a very fair manner.

THE MEN OF THE MATCH

Tom Stead (BJFF)
The centre-half won a toss-up with two-goal striker Scott Thompson, whose workrate was terrific. Stead didn’t put a foot wrong throughout and kept his cool under pressure in a solid performance.

Taz Moxon (YMCA)
The striker put BJ under pressure throughout the game. His workrate was excellent and he caused the defence a lot of problems. His impact was noted by the BJ manager.
