Fives
High fives at Rossall
TWO Fleetwood boys have proved majestic champions in a sport first played at their school in the days of Queen Victoria.
Doubles partners Alex Lewis and James Hough were victorious in the under-15 National Fives Championships, at their school, Rossall.
Fives is similar to squash but is played with a bat or the hands rather than a racket.
The 14-year-old duo beat all the country’s top teams, including favourites Lancing College of West Sussex 11-4 in the final.
Their victory follows success in the national Under-14 plate competition in London earlier this year.
It was a day of double celebration for Alex, who added the singles title to his doubles triumph, with an emphatic 11-0 victory in the final over UK No.4 Jamie Betts of Lancing College.
Lewis, who dropped only 10 points in all his games en route to the final, now has three national titles to his name despite taking up the sport only 12 months ago.
There were more excellent Rossall performances in the Open Doubles, as Michael Docherty and Guy Holder-Williams, both 17, reached the final only to be edged out 11-9.
In the doubles plate, Rossall’s Sing Liem and Tim Kenyon proved too strong in the final for schoolmates Alex Alonso and Richard Docherty.
Charlie Andrews and Jack Morrison also reached the under-14 doubles plate final.
Rossall fives coach Tom Root said: “It’s been a fantastic year for fives at the school and and augurs well for the World Championships we stage here next spring.”
