Manchester get a mauling from rampant Kirkham
THE rugby season is up and running at Kirkham Grammar School and the first XV got off to a great start with a 54-0 win over Manchester Grammar School.
After a predictably rusty opening, a try by captain and no.8 Richard De Carpentier settled KGS after a break by prop Kieran Brookes, who scored the second try himself before half-time.
The home side dominated the second half, as a try by winger Tommy Banks was followed by scores from Theo Mason, Kieran Brookes, Lewis Russell and David Bibby.
Full-back Joe Brown kicked 14 points and scored the final try for KGS, who next face a tough visit to Colston's Collegiate of Bristol.
The second XI match finished in another comprehensive Kirkham win, this time 34-0.
Ashley Parkinson opened the scoring with a penalty before Wasim Riley scored from the scrumbase.
Manchester looked threatening but David Ellis and Will Stover added tries before half-time.
Finally in the first half, a turn over from a scrum as a result of good work by Riley allowed a counter attack with Will Stover in close support to score in the corner.
Kirkham had to defend strongly after the break but Ellis scored his second in the corner and Oliver Chambers scored from long-range.
Also against Manchester, the under-16s were 18-7 winners after gradually gaining control. Mo Riley, Matthew Edgar and Matthew Bennett scored tries and Jamie Roper a penalty.
The under-15s lost 28-10 despite taking the lead when Joe Casson beat three on the outside from Jake Hodgkinson's pass.

However, two converted tries gave Manchester a half-time lead only for Ryan Morton to reply from a tap penalty.
Two more Manchester tries sealed the win despite good breaks by James Lau and Jonathan Davies.
The under-14s felt unfortunate to lose 29-5 after fine pack displays by Mickey Papangelis, Adam Galley and Rhys Williams.
Tom Hurst, Sam Hall, Harry Moulding and Will Roper were outstanding in defence.
The under-13s made an encouraging start despite losing 44-27. They trailed 25-15 at half-time after tries from Ben Rhodes-Powers (2) and Andrew Collins. Ryan Wilkinson scored a long-range try, converted by Sam Gayle.
